About CUET

CUET UG* (Common University Entrance Test) is a centralized entrance test for undergraduate courses to the central and many other states, deemed and private universities. CUET has levelled the unequal marking system of different educational boards. It has provided a fresh opportunity to all the students aspiring to get admissions in various universities across the country. CUET examination is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA).

The examination will be held in 4 sections:

Section I: Languages
Section IA— 13 languages
Section IB— 20 languages
Section II: 27 domain-specific subjects
Section III: General Test

Type of questions
Multiple Choice Questions based on NCERT Class XII syllabus will be asked.

Marking scheme
Correct answer— 5 marks Incorrect answer— 1 mark will be deducted
No answer— 0 marks will be awarded

Mode of Examination

  • Hybrid Mode: Pen and Pencil (offline) + Computer Based Test (CBT) Mode 
  • It will be conducted in 3 slots— 
    • Slot 1: 2 hours
    • Slot 2: 2 hours 
    • Slot 3: 3 hours
  • There will be negative marking. 1 mark will be deducted for the wrong answer.
  • Level of the examination will be class 12. 
  • The CUET 2024 exam is being held in three slots on different days based on the subjects chosen by the candidates.
  • The candidates can take a maximum of 4 test in Slot 1 which will be held in the morning shift. These tests include one language from Section IA, maximum of two domain specific subjects from Section II and one General Test from Section III.
  • The CUET 2023 examination for slot 2 is being held in afternoon and candidates can take a maximum of 5 tests in the following manner –
  • One language from Section IA & IB and a maximum of four domain-specific subjects from Section II.
  • Two languages from Section IA & IB and a maximum of three domain specific subjects from Section II.
  • The CUET for slot 3 is being held in evening shift.

Important Points to be Remembered

  • A candidate can choose a maximum of 06 Test papers (04 or 05 domain subjects including 

General Test and 01 or 02 languages). (As per official Bulletin of 2024)

  • In Section II, candidates can select a maximum of 4 or 5 Subjects from 27 available options.
  • Section III consists of the General Test.
  • A candidate can take a maximum of 10 test in the following manner—
  • Maximum of 2 languages from Section IA and Section IB taken together, maximum of 6 domain subjects from Section II and General Test from Section III.

    Candidates are advised to refer to the official CUET UG notification or website for the most accurate and detailed syllabus for the current examination cycle.

Section IB (Optional languages)— French, Spanish, German, Nepali, Persian, Italian, Arabic, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Konkani, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Santhali, Tibetan, Japanese, Russian, Chinese 

Type of questions 

  • Language to be tested through reading comprehension
  • Factual, literary, and narrative-type passages will be asked which aims to test the literary aptitude and vocabulary of the aspirant.

Nationality – Indian nationals are eligible to apply.

Age Limit

  • No specific age limit
  • However, candidates must check the age criteria of the specific university they are applying to.

Educational Qualification

  • Candidates must have passed the Class 12th examination or equivalent from a recognized board.
  • Minimum Marks

General category: Minimum 50% marks in Class 12th.
SC/ST/PwD categories: Minimum 45% marks in Class 12th.

  • However, there is no clarity in the Delhi University bulletin on this subject. 
  • Whereas, JNU demands only 45% for all categories.

Subjects Required

  • Depends on the program and university. 
  • Typically, candidates must have studied relevant subjects in Class 12th.

Number of Attempts 

  • No limit on the number of attempts.

Eligibility for Specific Courses

  • Specific courses may have additional eligibility criteria.                                  
  • For instance, science courses might require candidates to have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology in Class 12th.
  •  Another example can be added here. For Economics, it is mandatory to pass the Mathematics subject in 12th class.

Integrated Courses 

  • Where you can avail the degree of Bachelors and Masters both in a same university by giving CUET UG examination. 
  • Some Universities take CUET PG examinations again for the Post Graduation course. 

Domicile Requirements

  • Some universities may have domicile requirements; candidates should check the specific requirements of the university they are applying to.

Reservation Criteria (as per government norms):                                                     

SC: 15%
ST: 7.5%
OBC-NCL: 27%
PwD*: 5%
EWS: 10%

Additional Points to Note

Language Proficiency

  • Some universities might require proficiency in the medium of instruction.

Gap Year

  • Candidates with a gap year after Class 12th are also eligible to apply, provided they meet the other criteria.

Subject Combinations 

  • For certain programs, there may be requirements for specific subject combinations in Class 12th.
  • Candidates should check the specific eligibility criteria of the university and program they are interested in, as there may be additional or differing requirements.
